SYNOPSIS
Fifty-five years after the Second World War, the actor Manfred Zapatka reads the infamous speech by Heinrich Himmler that was originally given on 4 October 1943 in front of 92 SS generals at the castle Posen. Romuald Karmakar’s film explores with exacting precision the mechanics of violence at the heart of the twentieth century. The film proposes a radical treatment of history, the ethics of re-enactment and use of archival material. Das Himmler-Projekt 2000 is key work in Romuald Karmakar’s uncompromising body of work and his unflinching investigation of the perpetrators of violence and German history. – Tate Modern, 2015
